Pioneering CO2 Funded Transport Projects in Central America

Design of the first transport project worldwide funded by a CO2 fund based on projected mitigation of greenhouse gases. Jürg Grütter designed the transport projects including cleaner vehicles and fuels for six Central American countries financed by a fund provided by the Swiss government. He subsequently implemented projects from 1993 to 1997 as the Director for Central America on behalf of Swisscontact, initially as an employee and later through his own contracted company.

First World Congress on Air Pollution and Climate Change in the Transport Sector for Developing Countries

Grütter Consulting organized in Costa Rica on behalf of the Swiss government the 1st world congress on air pollution and climate change in the transport sector for developing countries. At that time climate change in the transport sector piggybacked primarily on clean air policies and was a novel topic to most stakeholders, especially in developing countries.

Pioneering Low Carbon Transport Initiatives in Switzerland

First aggregator projects in the transport sector for low carbon transport initiatives. Grütter Consulting clustered for the private energy agency EnAW multiple groups of logistics, trucking and building machine operators and identified for these measures to reduce CO2 emissions including fleet renewal, alternative fuel usage, mode switch road to rail and road to shipping, load optimization, eco-drive and vehicle efficiency measures. The programs were approved by the Swiss government as voluntary carbon offset projects, being the first officially registered CO2 transport offset projects worldwide and received payment based on actual tons of CO2 reduced by the Climate Cent Foundation. Grütter Consulting designed, managed and monitored the groups including more than 120 companies from 1998 to 2007.

Pioneering CO2 Emission Reduction in the Transport Sector: The First Approved International Methodology for Bus Rapid Transit Projects

Successful development and registration of the 1st approved international methodology for CO2 emission reduction in the transport sector. The methodology was approved and registered by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC under the Clean Development Mechanism and registered as AM0031. The methodology was for Bus Rapid Transit projects. 2006 Successful development and registration of the 1st approved CO2 emission reduction transport project worldwide under an international registry. The Bus Rapid Transit project of TransMilenio was approved and registered by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC under the Clean Development Mechanism and received carbon credits for two periods of seven years each. Grütter Consulting not only designed the project but also realized during the entire period the monitoring up to successful issuance and sales of the Carbon credits.

The TAC is an independent technical body of experts for the Gold Standard Foundation. It provides expert advice and strategic input to The Gold Standard in a transparent, credible, and timely manner to ensure credibility, environmental integrity, and a positive impact on sustainable development for Gold Standard project activities. The TAC oversees project registration/credit issuance procedures, approves methodologies and supports the continuous improvement and adaptation of The Gold Standard rules and procedures to market and stakeholder demands in both Compliance and Voluntary Markets.

Pioneering Carbon Offset Projects in Transportation and Biofuel Sectors

1st registered voluntary market CO2 offset project in the transport sector worldwide. Grütter Consulting designed the Canada based Westport GHG efficiency heavy duty engines project under the Verra standard.

First registered bio-fuel project worldwide. Grütter Consulting developed the methodology and the project for a plant oil sustainable biofuel project in Paraguay, registered and with the UNFCCC CDM standard.

Honam High-Speed Rail: Korea's First Registered Domestic Carbon Offset Transport Project

1st registered domestic carbon offset transport project in Korea. Grütter Consulting developed the methodology and the project documentation for the registration of the High-Speed Rail project Honam and is responsible for the 10-year monitoring period.

First Green Climate Fund-Supported Transport Project

Development of the 1st approved GCF Green Climate Fund transport project. The BRT Karachi, Pakistan has as special features the usage of biogas buses using 100% biogas from a dedicated biogas facility using cow dung. Additionally electric last-mile connectivity 3-wheelers and extensive non-motorized transport facilities are included in the program. Grütter Consulting did all documentation including annexes of the funding proposal.

Development of other successfully registered GCF transport programs including the light duty rail Costa Rica, as well as three large scale e-mobility funds or multiple Latin American and Asian countries.

First large scale electric Ferry project in Bangkok,Thailand.

Technical and environmental due diligence for worldwide 1st large scale electric ferry project for 35 electric 300 passenger ferries in Bangkok, Thailand. Loan provided by the ADB with Clean Technology Finance participation.

Full electric ferry’s are operating successfully since 2023 in Bangkok Thailand.

Grütter Consulting has provided support in the design of electric ferry projects in multiple countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, and Nigeria.

Grütter Consulting and Rebel Group Launch Zeroca to Advance E-Mobility and Carbon credits

Grütter Consulting and Rebel Group jointly form Zeroca as a new company focusing on e-mobility and carbon credits.  By the end of 2024 Zeroca had entered already a successful registration phase of the first article 6.2 e-mobility program worldwide, in Chile with Uruguay following in January 2025.

Advancing Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility: Quito's First 100% Electric Trolleybus

At Grütter Consulting, we are honored to have supported the arrival of the first 100% electric trolleybus in Quito, a significant step toward sustainable and inclusive urban transit.

Our contributions included:

Developing a Universal Accessibility Plan to ensure inclusivity for all users.
Supporting the acquisition of 50 electric trolleybuses, reducing CO2 emissions by 171 tons per bus annually (lifetime more than 4,200 ton per bus) and and cutting local pollutants, mainly reducing PM2,5 emissions by 25 kg per bus annually (lifetime more than 616 kg per bus). Analysis of the installed capacity of trolleybus traction substations for the new 50 trolleybuses. Promoting a cleaner, more accessible, and efficient public transport system.

Developing Sustainable E-Boat Transport in Hue Vietnam

We are pleased to be working alongside the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support climate action and sustainable transport planning in Hue, Vietnam.

As part of ADB’s regional initiative to help implement nationally determined contributions (NDCs), Grütter Consulting is contributing to the development of a sustainable transport investment concept for Hue City. This includes assessing the potential for an electric boat (e-boat) program and identifying key policy, financial, and regulatory pathways to support low-carbon transport.

Our work supports the city’s green growth and climate goals under Vietnam’s National Green Growth Strategy and Climate Change Action Plan.

Advancing Sustainable Mobility in Addis Ababa

Grutter Consulting is excited to share our collaboration with the AFD - Agence Française de Développement (AFD) on the "Opportunity Study for Introducing E-Buses on the BRT B2 Project in Addis Ababa." During this project, we had the opportunity to visit our client, AFD, in Addis Ababa to assess the prefeasibility of introducing electric buses to the BRT B2 routes.
